| Isn't greyhawk supposed to be the generic campaign setting? I dunno where I heard that, which is usually what happens when I make something up, forget about it, and remember it as if somebody else had told me | |

| I've been thinking of fiddling with some Greyhawk, but have no clue when I'll have a chance to game again | |

| They Used Greyhawk As The Base Campaign Since It Was Pretty Much Dead And The Good Ones ( Dragonlance And Ravenloft ) Were Too Specific.
The Forgotten Realms Would Have Been The Logical Choice, However. But WotC And Logic Do Not Match,LOL

| Well, FR still makes money as a seperate campaign though. If everybody had the better setting as the default, they wouldn't want to go buy greyhawk books, as it's not really as good as FR IMO (and a lot of other people's). Now you have to buy the greyhawk player's handbook, greyhawk completes, greyhawk accessories, forgotten realms campaign setting, forgotten realms cities books, forgotten realms modules, etc. I see a new FR book every month, so they have to be selling pretty decent | |

| Try looking for some of the second ed. fluff. The timelines and geography are pretty important for Greyhawk. Also, check with anyone you know that happens to be doing "Living Greyhawk" as I'm pretty sure that they'll some have a bit more current information.
Anymore, I would just take what I like a about a module/adventure and tweak it to fit whatever campaign world I happened to be running. While the established worlds are nice, they're no replacement for an original world.

| As a fan of Greyhawk, I would have to say that it is not the "default" setting. Originally it was the only setting (Before FR and Eberron), but with the creation of 3rd and 3.5 Editions Greyhawk was no longer supported like it once was. One could say that it is because of lack of interest, but I believe part of it was Forgotten Realms has been very lucky with have exceptional Novels written about characters in the FR.
I have also found that the majority of "serious" players (mostly older) decided that when TSR was bought by Wizards, they decided to use more original material. So to say that Greyhawk is dead is false, that will more than likely happen though when 4th edition is released.
If you want some good Greyhawk material look in old copies of Dungeon or Dragon magazines, or search the internet for websites like Canonfire. You'll see that although the system isn't supported, it is still very much alive. |
