Invisibility Empty
PostSubject: Invisibility   Invisibility EmptyMon Feb 26, 2007 10:27 pm

Hello all - new to these boards, but love the set up/colors/background! Much more interesting than the run of the mill forum!!!

I have a question on invisibility:

When a character is invisible, and he is in range of another character who has cast detect (magic, evil, etc) is he shielded from these spells, or can these spells detect "him" and eventually pinpoint his location?

Welcome to the forum, Harneloot!

Your question is a good one, and I had never thought about detect magic as a way to detect an invisible creature.

I am not sure, but after reading the description of detect magic spell, I would say that the caster should be able to detect the presence of the magical aura given off by the invisiblity spell on the round he casts detect magic, determine it's school as illusion on the second round, and on the third round, discern its location.

As for detect chaos/law/good/evil, I think the same would apply.

The invisible character, however, would still be invisible to the caster, and still benefit from invisibilty as far as bonuses and effects go, but the detector would know generally where he stands.

The only thing is, the invisible character would probably have to be within the cone-shaped emanation of the spell each round for it to be able to detect him. If the invisible character were moving about, it would probably be rather difficult to detect him.

I'd say it could work, but there are more reliable ways to detect invisible characters.

Is the character under a invisability spell ot cloak of invisibility? If so they can be detedted. But as Scruffy said, the character would have to be within a cone or the area effect of the detect magic spell.

OK, but wouldn't the detect magic caster be able to see whatever magic items glowing on the person? I'm sure you'd have something magical on you.
