Favourite monsters to use against PC's...

OK folks, just wondering what baddies ye love to throw against yer players. Mine are:

Low level:

Gnolls - tough, intimidating, enough badness to make pc's think twice about going overland
Gelatinous Cube - who doesn't love the cube?
Undead - I'm infamous for using the life-impaired...

Mid level:

Undead - see above
Molds, oozes, fungi - more fun than a barrel of monkeys (yes, even winged monkeys)
Evil priests - my guys (rightly) fear these more than wizards...

High level:

Big bashers: giants, ettins, trolls - hit 'em hard and make 'em work for those xp
Mind Flayers: when the double-digit level pc's wet their pants at the mention of a monster, it's ok in my books!
Undead - evil, intelligent undead can really, really ruin an adventurer's day...

low levels nothing beats a kobold.

Now mind you I just started dming with a couple friends and cousins, so I am wet behind the ears.

A good dry cloth will take care of that Chosen...I prefer one stitched together from deceased PC's character sheets...

I have a fetish for using lots of Fiends, Undead, Slimes/Oozes/Molds/Fungi, Psionic stuff, Neogi, Umber Hulks and Hook Horrors.

I'm a fan of goblins and kobolds.

Owlbears Yah!
I like monsters period.
Love fiends they are cool
Use some undead but not a huge fan.

Hi, IMO the monsters effective against most cocky PCs are:

giants - boulder throwing...
black dragons - obvious acid threat...
gorgons - obvious...

Those requiring a difficult saving throw versus petrification etc, or even something with a 20N attack such as remorhazs or behir? My old DM adjusted the drow so that they could flee in the form of giant spiders taking much of their treasure with them. When I learnt that this was the reason for their just disappearing when threatened I felt the DM had been duping us. He even played out a remorhaz SD as destroying my frostbrand in G2. Was I pissed off by that!

When a serious threat to a monster in the form of a particularly plussed-out fighter needs to be baten back then a nice fear attack/hold person effect/suggestion effect/displacement effect can cause the toughest PC to pause allowing a monster's minions etc to get some nice hits in...

Cardman those tactics you describe with the monster's minions are classic, thanks for bringing those back.

I've always had a certain fondness for G-Cubes and Umber Hulks. Can't beat the classics.

I think one of the best D&D monsters in my oppinion is the Illithid (Mind Flayer) found in the depths of the Underdark.

Another I like to use would be Demons or any sort of Monster which can inflict Stat Drains.. oh how I love to use those agains people.

Thirdly, I really REALLY enjoy annoying monsters, so Rust Monsters are a big time favourite of mine.

"Yes...??"
"And you are fighting a rust monster?"
"Yesss.... what's your point?"
"You sword has now been turned to rust and breaks in your hand into several pieces"
"WHAT, that sword cost me 30k.."
"Really.....how much for your Armour, well it IS metal isn't it?"
"WHAAAAAT Oh MAN"

Haha. We faced rust monsters twice and I was able to survice, as I was playing a rogue who had a bow of all wood. I was fortunate with some goods rolls thoough.

There are ways around Rust Monsters, but I will not be saying any of them here, can't let you all into my secrets now can I.

I love demons and devils always did. But I did like the Shadows that I threw at my players the other week.

Dear God! Shadows never had luck with them either.
